20 Movies That Freaked Us Out As Kids

There are some movies that are supposedly family friendly, generally rated U or PG which in all honesty are way too freaky to have such a young rating! Some movies that seemed harmless at the time, but when you watch them as a child are truly terrifying! The ones that still freak us out now as adults, and refuse to let our kids watch them! They succeeded in freaking out their target audience, even if that wasn't the plan! So here's a list of movies that freaked us out as children!
The Dark Crystal
Definitely one of the scariest on this list, it's just terrifying. I am a big fan of Jim Henson films, but not this one. Apparently this movie was loosely based on Grimm Fairy Tales, so no wonder it's freaky. Turns out Jim Henson deliberately wanted to scare children, and it worked. The sounds, the puppetry even the heroes of the movie are scary!

Beetlejuice
Now I know this isn't aimed at children but it's not technically an adult movie, and I remember watching it as a child. It terrified me for years, I still hate it now. Whenever anyone said the word 'Beetlejuice' I'd panic, and pray that they wouldn't say it two more times.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Ohh The Child Catcher, you haunted my dreams. As I'm sure he did to many children. What a terrifying concept. The way he looks, the way he dances around and tempts children into his vehicle with sweets. While writing this I rewatched the scenes and it is literally something out of a horror movie!

Pinocchio
I used to love Disney movies as a child (who am I kidding, I still do!) but Pinocchio really freaked me out. I liked the movie as a whole, and I used to watch it fairly often, but I had to stop & turn it off towards the end. When they get swallowed by a whale, it used to make me cry hysterically. I hated it!

Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters really freaked me out the first time I saw it. I didn't understand how it was a comedy! Those ghosts were scary! Even the green ghost & the marshmallow man!

Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs
I used to love this movie actually, (haha used to) but one particular scene really scared me. You must know the scene? The one where the Evil Queen does the spell and turns into this haggered old woman! It was so freaky!

The Witches
Everything about this movie really terrified me, possibly more so than any others on this list! Even reading the book gave me nightmares. Normally I love Roald Dahl books, but this was worse than a horror movie. Witches still freak me out now, and I will never ever watch this again! The scene when the main witch takes off her mask. Ahhhhhh!!

Bicentennial Man
I don't know what it is, but robots freak me quite a bit! I know it's supposed to be a happy, sweet even inspirational movie but I just cannot deal with robot people!!

The Goonies
'Sloth scared the hell out of me, especially the scene where Chunk ends up in his room where he's chained up. That left my heart pounding! I was very young, probably 6 when I was first saw the film. Amazing prosthetics for the 80's!' @ Kiki & Ginge

Labyrinth
'Some of the creatures and the atmosphere. Plus the fact that she lost her baby brother is still something that makes me shudder. Especially now I'm a mum.' Scandimummy

Return To Oz
'So many scary things in this film it's impossible to list them all! The room full of heads was particularly frightening though! It still creeps me out to think of it now! @ Surviving Life's Hurdles

D.A.R.Y.L

Darby O'Gill & The Little People
'Probably an Irish thing but 'Darby OGill and the little people' a lovely family film with leprechauns magic and fun. Oh and at the end there's a banshee!! Who puts a banshee in a family movie?!' @ Daddy Poppins

Wizard Of Oz
' I was scared of most things as a child. I remember being particularly scared of the witch from Wizard of Oz and that scene where she screeches, Dorothy jumps in shock and the orchestral music gets all dramatic! Also the flying monkeys terrified me. I was a pathetic child!' @ Living With A Jude

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
'The Oompa-Loompas from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory gave me the willies. In fact the whole film was a bit freaky...' @ Bad Dadu
