The Little Things I Want To Teach My Children

I was brought up into a wonderful family. A family so full of love, kindness, support. A family who are there for each other no matter, a family who has always been close and ensures that every one is treated equal and keeps in contact with one another. How you are brought up has a huge impact on who you become as a parent, so what lessons have I learnt growing up, that I will or perhaps will not be passing down to my children?

The Little Things I Want To Teach My Children - 10 life lessons

Having children is a huge event. It's not just becoming pregnant and giving birth. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. You are bringing another, incredible, yet delicate human being into the world. You are spending the next 18 years or so trying your very hardest to ensure you do everything right, you raise them correctly and teach them everything they need to know, before they step off into the big wide world for themselves. It is our responsibility raise the next generation of confident, kind and motivated people.

So what little things do I want to ensure my children know as they grow up?

It's OK To Express Your Feelings - Don't bottle them up
Bottling up your feelings has never helped anyone. It only makes you feel worse. No matter what, it's healthy to express and talk about how you feel, good or bad.

Trust Your Instincts
Trusting your instincts can be a hard thing to master, it's the ultimate test of trusting yourself, but it's hugely important and you'll soon learn to be able to listen to your intuition. (On a side note, Mother's instinct is a real, incredible thing - don't doubt it!)

Take Care Of Yourself
Your health and happiness is in your hands and it's so important to have a healthy relationship with yourself. Look after yourself, spend time alone and remember your needs are just as important as everyone else's. Stay healthy, be loving, believe in yourself.

Read More Books
When we are children, it's always instilled in us just how important reading is from a young age. To learn how to read letters and words, to read and speak the sounds, to develop our imaginations. But as we grow older, reading becomes so much less of a priority. But that seems to suggest that we simply stop learning after our school years, and that's not true at all! Continuing to read books, for education and for enjoyment not only enhances our vocabulary or communication skills - but reading helps us all to learn how to express ourselves, educate ourselves and learn how to switch off. So read books, read all the books!

Always Have A Hobby
Life is so busy. So, so busy. So finding a hobby, or two, or a hundred - and making time for it is important. It helps to release tension from the busy days we've had, it again helps you switch off and relax, do something that makes you happy and enjoy yourself.

If you think about it, when you're a child, and you go to school, when you come home from school each day all you want to do is relax. Kick back, relax, read a book, play outside, play with your toys - kids know how to switch off from their daily routine, it's when we become older we forget how important, and enjoyable it is to do so!

Never Lose Your Sense Of Humour
Having a good sense of humour doesn't just mean you're good at telling jokes or 'always up for a laugh' - having a good sense of humour is about the ability to switch off, and not take everything so seriously. Being able to relax and unwind, show slight vulnerability, and open your heart to others. It not only improves your social skills but also your mental and physical health too!

Unplug & Switch Off
Switching off doesn't just mean turning off technology, although that's a big part of it. It means being able to escape the difficult, busy, routines of our day to day lives and simply relax! Get outside, talk to friends, do something that makes you feel good. Anything that will stop the stress in your body building up. Step out from your routine and do something just for you.

Do Things That Scare You
Step out of your comfort zone once in a while. Trying new things, or taking that leap and being brave, doing something that scares you can help you in so many ways. It can hugely build your confidence, help you be more productive, motivate and inspire you! Trying new things can improve your happiness, and how do you know what you like if you don't try?

Be Kind & Polite To Others
Being kind is one of the most important things you can ever be. I was brought up to be kind, and I have always always ensured my children know just how important it is to be kind. To use your manners, to be respectful and think of others. Kindness creates good relationships, creates compassion, happiness, success, understanding, confidence, health - not just in ourselves, but in everyone else too. Be kind, always.

Be Yourself
Being yourself is the only path to true happiness. Dress the way you want to dress, act the way you want the act, be the person you want to be. Live life on your terms, not anyone else's. Love who you are.

And never ever forget - I will always be here for you no matter what.

I love you. ❤

This is a lovely post. I particularly like the one about switching off, so important to remember to do this. Also, I need to read more books too. I have so many just waiting to be read!

Sweet list - might have to laminate :) I'm really working on Number 3. I felt so guilty and then I realised that to be the best Mum I had to invest in my own wellbeing. #mummymonday
