Why We've Decided To Start Homeschooling

Homeschooling has always been at the back of my mind to be perfectly honest, and my husband was all for it too. I wasn't worried when we were sort of forced into doing it when lockdown happened earlier this year.

I felt like I knew what I was doing, I could handle it! And without tooting my own horn - I did handle it! It took us a few weeks/months to work out what was best for us and what type of teaching and learning would work for us all, and in the end it worked out well.

I've always wanted to be a teacher too, ever since I can remember. I use to play 'schools' with my friends, when I was at Primary school myself, and I used to play it with the brother and sister as they got older too. During my secondary school years, I was adamant that's what I wanted to do. I applied for all the relevant subjects at college - and although that didn't work out too well in the end, I was still determined I wanted to be a teacher - a Primary School teacher specifically.

Then times changed, I had my beautiful girl (my eldest) straight after I had finished college, and all of a sudden - a switch clicked and I didn't want to be a teacher anymore. During the experiences I had at college, I really didn't think I could hack it. I was never confident being around lots of adults, and I knew that being a school teacher - although I'd mostly be around children, there would also be regular occasions when I would need to project confidence and show my knowledge to adults - I didn't really ready for that at all. So that plan was out the window.

Now as I'm a work at home mum, I have the ability to stay home and teach my children here. Teach them more than just facts and figures. Exploring the world outside, learning about real topics and interesting things they want to learn about!

So when lockdown began we all thought we'd see how it went, no one knew how long it'd be for after all! Gradually, a month or so in - another switch clicked. This is what I could do.

My eldest two have really enjoyed learning at home to be perfectly honest, sure they miss their friends (I'll ensure they still have plenty of social experiences too!) but they've progressed so much over the past few months, I don't want it to stop! We've been learning about Dinosaurs, about the Weather, the Emergency services and how to call 999 in an emergency, animals, families, sea creatures - and honestly, they've taken in so much. They love talking about the weather now, and will constantly talk to me about different creatures that live under the sea! They understand how rain and snow are formed too.

I love the fact that I've been the one to teach them all of this, and I love that they love learning it!
It feels like the perfect idea for us right now, and I honestly can't wait to get started. Lockdown was the kick up the bum I needed, to say "YES! I can do this!".

Although I'm not completely sure of the approach we will be taking, I know that I will be loosely following the curriculum (incase they were to go back to school in the next few years), but we will also make sure we get out and explore the world around us, and do lots of creative activities too.

Wish me luck!

Have you ever considered homeschooling before?
