What Do You Look For In A Career?

* This is a collaborative post

Whether you are trying to change careers soon or you are just thinking about trying to improve your career trajectory, it’s a good idea to make sure that you know what kind of job you would most like to do. One good way to get close to that is to figure out what you mostly look for in a career. If you can work that out, it is much more likely that you will end up doing something you truly love, so this is important to consider. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the major things that you should look out for in a dream career, and which you might not want to overlook.

The Right Team
Working with the right people is always going to be important if you want to be happy in a job. You can generally ensure that you are working in the right kind of place if the people you work with are the sort that you get on well with. Of course, you can’t always tell whether this is going to be the case before you start work. But in the interview stage, you can generally start to get some idea. You might also be able to tell from the industry itself, as certain people are liable to work in certain fields.

As long as you can find the right team to work with, you should find that finding the right career is much more likely to happen for you. You will generally enjoy the day to day experience a lot more, and that is largely what matters most of all.

Fun
There is nothing wrong with working somewhere fun, although of course you might expect some workplaces to be more or less fun than other ones. If you have seen the BBC documentary, Call That Hard Work? you will have seen some examples of the more fun kind of workplace, and for many people that turns out to be pretty much the most important thing of all. In any case, you certainly want to feel as though you can talk openly and enjoy yourself as much as possible in a workplace, and if you are not able to do that then you might not enjoy the work as much, making it a much less viable career option for you, especially if that is what you are going for.

The Opportunity To Use Your Skills
Everyone has certain skills that they like to use, and there is always a great enjoyment to be had in making use of skills in interesting ways. If you can find the perfect career, that will generally be something that allows you to use your skills in an interesting and engaging manner, and this is something that is certainly worth thinking about when you are looking for a career change.

In order to do that, you should of course become clear on what your own skills actually are in the first place. Without that, you are going to struggle to find a job where you can use them. It could be worth taking an online quiz for this, or simply asking the people around you what they think your best and most obvious skills are. You might be surprised at some of the answers, and this in turn could prove to be a very useful way to start searching for your dream job. It’s all about doing something that is going to make good use of what you can do, whatever that might turn out to be.

Rewarding
People often say that they want a job which is rewarding, but what does this really mean? People might have different ideas about this, but for most of us a rewarding job is simply one which we feel is worth doing in some important way, either because it helps other people or adds something of value to the world, or because we come away from a day at work feeling as if we have really done something worthwhile. If you want to feel that way, you should very much try to seek out a job that you think is adding something worthwhile, as that way you are going to find it so much more rewarding in general.

These are just some of the things you might look for in a career, and which are therefore worth pursuing whenever you are thinking about changing up your career path and looking for a new kind of job.
