Plants You Can Grow at Home to Boost Your Health

* This is a collaborative post

It’s long been understood that what you eat can have a real impact on your health. You often see this idea when people are trying to lose weight, but there are other health benefits to certain foods, other than just having a certain number of calories. Ideally, you want a nutrient-dense and varied diet so your body has everything it needs to function and repair itself.

While you can buy supplements and health foods to add to your diet, you might be surprised at what you can grow at home. Here are a few plants you should definitely add to your diet, and that you can grow yourself. …

Chillies
Chilli peppers might not seem like a health food, but they can have some fantastic benefits for your health. They’re packed with vitamin C, as well as loads of fibre and minerals. They’re popular for at-home plants because they’re really easy to grow, don’t take up a lot of space (so they’re an ideal windowsill plant), and they can look really pretty. You can grow chillies of varying levels of hotness as well, so if you don’t like spicy food, you don’t need to jump straight to the superhot varieties. This being said, there are some benefits to eating spicy food, as capsaicin (the chemical that makes chillies spicy) also has health benefits, including potential anti-carcinogenic properties.

Mushrooms
A slightly less common choice is mushrooms. Believe it or not, mushrooms are really easy to grow and harvest at home, especially if you buy some mushroom spawn to get it going. After a short time, you can harvest whatever mushroom variety you want, whether it’s tasty shitake or brain-boosting lion’s mane. Different mushrooms have been the subject of research to explore their potential health benefits. As well as containing protein and fibre, mushrooms have also been linked to improved concentration, cognitive performance, and even better sleep.

Kale
Kale is one of the most famous superfoods out there, and it’s also really easy to grow. You can stick it in a raised bed, a container, or wherever else you can find for it. It’s a great addition to loads of meals, and you can even sneak it into stews and casserole dishes so that fussy kids will find themselves benefiting from it. You can either buy plugs, or baby kale plants, for quicker growing and harvesting, or simply grow them from seed.

Other Houseplants
Of course, while eating plants is a great way to get their health benefits, growing houseplants can be good for you. Caring for plants can be a great routine that can help your mental health, and simply being around plants can make you feel better. Some plants are also great for the air quality in your home, filtering toxins and purifying the air. Plants are known for their ability to produce oxygen, so any plant can improve the air quality in your home. So, any potted plant, from a flower to a succulent, is a good addition to a healthy home.
