Signs It's Time to Replace Your Carpet

* This is a collaborative post

Carpets wear down over time with regular wear and tear and the demands of family life. Some carpets wear out sooner rather than later, depending on the location of the carpet, traffic flow in the area, and the materials the carpet is made from. For the most part, carpets last between five and fifteen years, but there will be signs that it's getting close to the time you need to replace your carpets. Let's take a look.

Visible Wear in High Traffic Areas

Hallways, staircases and the path between a sofa and doorway tend to show wear long before the rest of a carpet does. Flattened pile, thinning patches, or fibres that no longer spring back after you walk on them are all signs the material has passed the point where cleaning or repair will make a real difference.

If you're noticing this kind of wear in more than one area of the house, it's often a sign the whole carpet is nearing the end of its life rather than a problem you can patch. Comparing prices and options from a few carpet and flooring retailers beforehand means you can budget for the right carpet or flooring type when the time comes to replace it.

Persistent Odours That Won't Lift

A smell that lingers after cleaning, especially a musty or damp scent, usually means moisture has worked its way into the underlay or backing rather than just sitting on the surface. Steam cleaning and deodorising sprays can mask this for a while, but they won't resolve odours that have settled in below the pile.

This is particularly common in carpets that have been exposed to spills, pet accidents or damp conditions over several years. Once a smell keeps returning after proper cleaning, that's a fairly reliable sign that the carpet needs replacing rather than another round of treatment.

Stains That Won’t Come Out

Every carpet picks up the odd stain over the years, but some marks, particularly from wine ink or certain cleaning chemicals, can permanently alter the fibres rather than just sitting on top of them. If a professional clean has already been tried and the stain hasn't shifted, it’s unlikely further attempts will do much better.

A cluster of stubborn stains in visible areas like living rooms or hallways can also make a home look worn even if the rest of the carpet is in reasonable condition, which is often reason enough on its own to consider a replacement.

Allergy Symptoms Flaring Up Indoors

Older carpets can trap dust, pet dander and other allergens deep in the fibres even with regular vacuuming. If allergy symptoms seem to worsen specifically at home or improve noticeably when you're away, the carpet is worth looking at as a possible cause.

If carpets are more than a decade old, then they could most definitely be the cause of an increase in symptoms indoors, as the fibres and backing can hold onto allergens in a way that newer materials or hard flooring generally don't.
